Presentation Robin Støckert

Keyword soundwalks

Støckert is head of Soundscape Studios. http://www.soundscape-studios.no/

Established 1996

Different types of customers installations for museums.

Audiovisual installations.

Interactivity.

Also working directly with artists.

Simulation systems. Specially for the oil industry.

Visualisation systems. Virtual spaces. 3D-systems

Audio linked directly to the graphics.

Installation in public buildings.

Surveillance systems for the defence dept.

Education courses in acoustics.

Research and development.

Software development. System for control.

Playback systems for 3D audio.

Building recording studios.

A lot of stuff that connects in strange ways

Consists of a lot of different people and the network is the most important thing. The right people for the right solutions.

Different pay from different people. Oil industry pays, but there is a goal to works with artists as well.

Focused on;

Artist expressions

Technical solutions

Practical solution

Cost

Service and maintenance. Some of the installations are supposed to be working for a long time.

Insurance (third man)

Have to think about the whole process.

Usually there are small budgets on artistic projects.

Examples.

Folk museum in Oslo.

Augmented reality system.

Visual 3D 16 channel audio system.

Arne Nordheim http://www.arnenordheim.com/

Norwegian contemporary composer also doing some installations.

Sewage plant Oslo. Bekkelaget Renseanlegg. http://www.soundscape-studios.no/referanser/utsmykninger.htm Wanted to make an installation of sound moving around this plant. Tracking system. Every time one flushes the toilet this have an influence on the sound. Also the amount of shit and the amount of pollution. Guided tour every year in connection with the Ultima festival. Both sampled sounds and real time sounds.

32 channel audio system.

The echo and reverberation in the plant is interesting.

The place completely changed character when the sound was added.

Now the workers use the sound to know if the whole sewage system is working.

Always changing. Not repetitions.

Video documentation.

Vigelandsparken. Speakers and sensors in trees. 12 channel. Different programs for children, evening and so on. Walking through different soundscapes.

Flyndra http://www.flyndresang.no

Nils Aas wanted to hear the sculpture sing

Difficult because its outside in a park.

Using transducer. A loudspeaker without the membrane. Connected directly to the sculpture. Have to put something in movement. Can also be subsonic (buttshakers, Stageshakers).

Parameters for the sound in the sculpture are transmitted to Trondheim and then transmitted back to the statue. Parameters are decided from tide, temperature time of the day and so on.

Demo

Ultrasound speaker.

On 16 m it spreads 1m.

Ultrasound is highly directive.

Robins presentation ended with a soundwalk to Realfagsbygget In Trondheim and an installation they been making there in collaboration wit Arne Nordheim http://www.soundscape-studios.no/referanser/utsmykninger.htm

Also a visit to the acoustics section at the University of Trondheim http://www.iet.ntnu.no/nb/groups/akustikk Anechoic room, reverberation room, multi channel sound systems.

After that; fresh air

Late night session.

Presentations

Morten

Field recording on the computer. Some kind of music ca 4 min.

Things are not seen: title

Artificial piece.

Noise repetitions changing in frequency an channels. Rhythmic, Nice spreading of different frequencies in channels. Overtaken by quiet guitar. Then noise and harmonic organ. Feedback, Gets noisier building up to a crescendo. Some

electric noises suggesting the room. Huge rocklike crescendo guitars noise different channels new rhythms. Suddenly stop to ethnic music that sounds like recorded through a door opening. Playing a song.

Almost a narrative going on.

Should have a short ending.

Problems on the way?

Everything worked fine.

Doddy Magga

Working title: rainbows

Voices in layers changing channels, working in harmony.  100 tracks.

Idea voice starts in one channel and spreads to the rest.

One single voice in repetitions on the same tone (a?) another tone comes in a third. A fourth. Not the exact same rhythm, but together making a strong rhythm. The suddenly changing into a disharmony, but eventually seems to turn back again when the layers get more end more. Building up to a crescendo. Losing the voices, could be anything. Then going back again. Getting thinner, more silent, more fragile.

Planned to start from one speaker to the rest.

Picture of a rainbow. When the sound  rises the rainbow is disolving.

Have time on the surround tomorrow.

Mette

Interested in representation of time and several layers of time and narrative structure. Lacking text at the moment,

Stanley Kubrick. Full metal jacket. The place Kubrick was recorded (Becton street).

Taking the sound and an image of the place as it is now

No title

Short picture and sound. Skipping between text and image.

1 minute. Maybe longer because of the text. Sound moving around the room. Insisting sounds.

Text (what sound) will be there during picture. Split screen.

Comments on several elements in film history. Text image sound split screen surround sound. . The old, the new.

Time concept. Cinematic also in using Kubrick as a starting point.

Christina.

Title: ‘What do I do now, maybe I’m lifting’

Still images not ready yet.

Quiet sounds of rustling boxes increasing in loudness coming from different channels but not moving. Then starts moving a lot more through different channels also increasing in intensity. Then almost dead quiet, just rustling. Increasing towards the end.

All natural sounds. Kept the natural quality. Maybe it should be enhanced in certain frequency areas. Bass.

Could be problem with pictures suggesting to much.

Espen

‘Reign of epileptics’

Got nothing to do with the syndrome.

2’50”

Maybe using flashlights-

Maybe sculpture.

Ping pong idea still remains.

Working on the beats.

Complex beats in different channels. Repeating sounds. Like a musical piece. Nice dynamics, suddenly going to a complete halt. Sometimes the ping pong sounds sound like machine guns, when their faster its like digital noise. Really slow its like the natural sound of ping pong balls.

Nestory

Working title: ‘Satellite’

Simple ticking high frequency sound moving in even rounds in the surround system. Resembling an electronically rendered heartbeat. Really low in volume. Minimal. Like crack in the lp record or the ticking of a clock.

Nanna.

‘The tunnel’

3’20”

Stretched the videofiles and mostly working on the sound.

Low frequency rumbling still picture through tunnel. A rhythm marks the shift in close picture. Steps. Reverberation. Going around the system. Higher frequency rhythm closing in on the picture. Loops, making a sort of picture. Then more quiet and disturbing as we move even closer. Soundscape changes every time the image gets closer. Ending in a fast rhythm. Fast zooming in on the image.

Tisha

‘Radiopiece’

Starting in really low frequency. Single tone. Scanning of radio comes up shortly o on side, high frequency on the other. Short scanning on the other Low frequency slowly rising reverberating. Scanning getting more intense moving around the channels. Making a rhythmic pattern. Some clicks.

Mixing not yet finished.

Like not finding the radio station.

Text giving locations (numbers) of the radio frequencies used will be added.

Marie

Make a live spectacle video and sound. Idea was to make on sound for each single visual pattern

Working title ‘Jungle’

Clean tones and noise

Animated images.

The piano is triggering the images.

Some ambient sounds.

Idea is to make  a 3D sound fore- middle- and background in the picture is connected to the same elements in the picture.

Using the MAX patch to make the surround.
