Sound Workshop KiT/TEKS/Nordic Sound Art

10.10-20.10 2007

Part three of the Max introduction course was held in the morning session. An intro to the use of Max in connection to midi and visual elements was given with the particular example of Maries piece for the concert on Saturday. Her piece is going to be performed live, and the Max patch for this performance is made so that the keys on the midi keyboard both trigger sounds and the visuals connected to these sounds. A short introduction was also given to the program Pure Data, Which is the open source equivalent to Max/MSP.

After that, Rune went to join Ivar at the KUNO meetings in Bergen. Per also being in Bergen in connection with the performance piece Ifigneia.

The conference part in Trondheim Matchmaking started today and some of the participants joined the conference. Most of the first days lectures evolving around man-machine relationships and bio-art in particular.

Participants also started rendering their projects to be ready for the concert on Saturday. Some problems occurred in this process. Especially the connection between audio and visuals were causing problems. But with the joint effort of the students they managed to render the 5.1 audio and visuals connected to it in the end.

DAY 11

Last day of workshop.

First post on the program today was a spoken presentation of the workshop in the Trondheim Matchmaking conference. Asbjørn gave an introduction to the work being done during the last one and a half week. Drawing the lines between these experiments and the connection they have to early experiments in music and sound art. A special emphasis was given to the role of sound in creating imaginary and virtual acoustic spaces, as this connected the workshop directly with the use or the standardised 5.1. system. It’s important to recognise that this system both represents a standardisation in a technological and an aesthetical sense. The aim of the workshop has been to put the cinematic conventions of surround sound to a test by exploring the possibilities of sound spatialisation.

Dodda Maggy and Mette gave a short intro to their background for joining the program and also an introduction to the specific pieces the have created in this workshop.

The presentation in this morning session was well received by the conference participants.

Per, Ivar and Rune came back from Bergen in early afternoon, and Per immediately started the work of getting all the projects into one system for presentation in the afternoon. The final result very elegantly and professionally with inter titles between the different pieces.

In addition a program leaflet was made by Rune with the students for presenting the different pieces to the audience and handed out before the concert.

An extremely chaotic sound check was done, and in the end the 5.1 system was up and running.

Nordic Sound Art was the first part of the concert program. We worried beforehand that this would mean few spectators and so on. Not a problem at all as the venue was packed by the time we started. So many in the audience that not all of them got to sit within the 5.1 system. They also managed to stay quiet through the whole concert, which was necessary as some of the pieces were very silent.

Program;

Mette Hersoug (DK): Beckton (2:00)

Linn Halvorsrød (N): Next stop: this town (3:00)

Apart for some minor technical and level problems the concert was a success.

After getting all the technical gear back to the workshop site we had a short evaluation talk and the main impression was that all the students and supervisors had enjoyed the whole workshop. Not only the work in itself but also the different presentations given throughout the workshop and as to getting more together as a group. We also agreed that it is important that the result of this workshop is documented on a DVD.

The evening ended in enjoying the rest of the concert and disco at Blæst.

See you in Copenhagen!
