6. Session Copenhagen

April 28-May 9 2008

Two weeks of workshops and lectures

Program

Monday

Workshop with Brandon LaBelle, day 1. Brandon presented his work. Gave the assignement – ”place the stick”. The task was to install a stick 2.5x2.5x150 cm somewhere so that it worked in relation to the surroundings.

Students started working

Tuesday

Workshop with Brandon LaBelle, day 2.

We looked at the different solutions. Mette used it to hang speaker. Stick suspended between two chairs. Sound “falls” from the speaker onto her head, while she’s lying underneath with cloth covering her face to “protect” her. Morten’s stick had grown overnight. He entered with a stick that was considerably larger than the one he was given. Espen had broken his stick in two and put it up in the shape of an X in a window referring to the glass being changed earlier. Attached to the one part is a printed picture of shattered glass. Tisha found that her stick vibrates with a frequency of 157,5 Hz. She wanted to work with it in the library relating it to paper and sawdust and books, but could not enter. Linn went to Nyhavn. Sitting on the peer she could reach the water with the stick, making a connection to another medium and another space than the touristy surroundings. Nestori wanted to have his stick infiltrate surroundings and placed it in a construction among other wood. Marie installed her in an open old tree in the Royal Garden so that it was in the “womb” of the tree. Dodda let her stick “disappear” among the branches of a flowering cherry tree (a small transparent plastic-star was hanging from it), while everyone was sitting underneath it sharing a moment of eating cake. The stick would serve the function as leaving a mark for the creation of a memory.

Nanna’s solution was to be announced as it involved a clairevoyant who would trace the history of the stick relating it to history.

New assignment was given at the end of the day. Use the location/situation that was introduced with the stick and work with sound instead.

Wednesday

Workshop with Brandon LaBelle, day 3.

Everyone met. First ideas was shared of possible solution to working with sound in relation to the space.

In the evening Brandon showed the movie “The Tailenders” by Adele Horne, about Christian missionaries using specially designed sound devices to spread the word of the bible translated into every language in the world.

Thursday

Workshop with Brandon LaBelle, day 4

Individual talks

Friday

Workshop with Brandon LaBelle, day 5

Student presentations. Everyone presented their work of relating sound to a space.

Marie had made a sound piece, with layered bursts of voice-sounds. Dodda, presented a small object - a small picture attached to a covered music box. Nanna showed a video of her burying the stick in a park, next to a road. Linn had made an “everyday altar” with the topic of 1.may, two small speakers facing each other were playing recordings of water and demonstrations. Espen had found recordings on the internet of lectures of how a voice can make glass shatter, it was played back on the giant boomblaster with a glass-bottle balancing on top, further there were a notation for the mixing of the sounds. Mette showed a video of her standing near the airport at night, a plane passes and she coveres her head with a handkerchief. Due to heavy rain Nestori was prevented from installing his formula one sounds in citty setting, but he presented the sounds.

Monday

Benny introduced to the techniques of the mastering process. The final phase of digital production.

Tuesday

Everyone went to the museum for contemporary art in Roskilde to meet with Morten Søndergaard and discuss possibilities of final exhibition. Looked at available spaces, indoor and outdoor (a.o. a garden an abandoned church)

Wednesday

Rune presented the technique of binaural spatialization, a technique of creating a realistic surround sound to be experienced when listening on headphones. Specifically the software Diesel studio by Dansih developers AM3D, created for designing realistic 3d spatial auditory space.

In the evening everyone went to see the performance “Relief” by Hotel Pro Forma who used binaural sound. The audience all wore headphones. Met the director and sound designers after the performance.
