The second Helsinki module of the 2012/13 Nordic Sound Art cycle will include a lecture and workshop and investigate various aspects of the notion of reverberation, defined as both, an acoustical phenomenon and a conceptual strategy in sound art.
We will research on specific projects by Max Neuhaus, Phill Niblock and listen / discuss  various case studies by Andy Graydon, Richart Garet and Helsinki sound artist  Eero Pulkkinen.

The course aims to deepen understanding and experience in working with recorded sound, audio processing, spatialization techniques, and sonic composition. This will include experimentation with different processing techniques, sound dynamics and manipulation, and approaches toward editing and final presentation. Conceptualization of "sonic signification" and listening experience will be further emphasized.

The lecture provides an overview of the history of Sound Art, from the early pioneers to the present practice of sonic art. These areas include, cinema for the ear, sound poetry, soundscape, acoustic ecology, silence, concrete music, environmental sound, sound installation, sound sculpture, lo-fi, recycling, found sound, turntablism, alien instruments, circuit bending, sonification, to name only a few.

Neanderthal Electronics


The first course in the new cycle of the Nordic Sound Art programme, takes place at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen Denmark Oct. 22 - Nov. 2nd.

8 new students are in the programme, representing  four nordic fine art academies: The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki Academy of Fine Arts, Bergen Academy of Fine Arts and Umeå Academy of Fine Arts.

LAK - Festival of Nordic Sound Art

The Nordic Sound Art joint study programme (MFA level) will again be open for applications in mid april 2012.
The specifics and exact application deadline will be announced on the website www.nordicsoundart.com.

The Nordic Sound Art programme is a two-year, MA level, education in sound art.
The study programme is arranged as a series of 12 intensive courses or workshops. One course-module of the programme will typically have one or two weeks duration.
The individual course-module takes place at one of the participating art academies.
